An interesting little place to pick up religious antiques and other damaged goods is this small cabin on the second floor of the Gallery of Contemporary Art, where you can also pick up authentic (so we`re told) 19th century samovars for between US$50-US$100. They also have one or two Soviet relics cluttering the place up, including a spooky white porcelain bust of Stalin.

GUM
Minsk`s showcase department store was 50 years old in 2001. A must for visitors on the Soviet trail, GUM has wonderful Stalinist architecture (note the stars in the windows and particularly the top of the stairwell, where groups of golden proletarian statues burst out in joyous hammer-and-sickle waving). Otherwise find a plethora of little kiosks selling basically everything you don`t need, and more. Electronics, perfume, cloth, buckets, watches. On the ground floor find photo development and an ATM that still displays old, non-existent 500,000br notes on its screen. The top-floor canteen provides very cheap food with a view.

A small store with a stand-up cafe, kebab joint (see Where to eat), and most importantly, the best supermarket in the centre (just hop up the stairs), selling foreign wines and the unmissable Zhirinovsky Vodka.
